Emergency Aid for Needy Families

The Prevention, Retention and Contingency (PRC) program helps families overcome immediate barriers to self-sufficiency. Benefits and services are for unemployed and low-income employed families or individuals in need of short-term help during a crisis.

Funded through the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program, PRC is another helpful option for families who may be receiving other public assistance such as Ohio Works First, Disability Financial Assistance and Food Assistance. Please note that PRC assistance may only be granted once a year.

What services can PRC cover?

  • Rent/mortgage
  • Automobile repairs
  • Utilities
  • Home repairs
  • Emergency shelter
  • Tools, equipment for employment
  • License and testing fees
  • Uniforms for work or school
  • Job coaching, job retention

Who may be eligible?

  • Needy families with minor children
  • Pregnant women
  • Non-custodial parents of minor children (Ohio residents not living in same household as child, cooperating with Child Support Enforcement Agency)

Verifications needed:

  • ID for the applicant
  • Documentation regarding your emergency
  • Verification of all income within 30 days of application
  • Verification of all monthly expenses
  • Child support documents or proof that child is in your household
  • Proof of residency
  • Social security numbers for all household members

A work requirement of 20 hours per week is needed for PRC assistance with car repair and employment materials. All PRC recipients must be within Federal Poverty Level guidelines.

How to apply

No appointment is needed, but you must have a face-to-face interview with a caseworker at The Job Center. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. You must show up by 3 p.m. for a same-day interview with the PRC program.
