License Types
Beginning October 1, 2020, the federal government will no longer consider standard driver licenses and identification cards as sufficient forms of identification for air travel. TSA will require a federally compliant driver license, identification card or another acceptable form of identification (such as a US passport or military ID) to fly within the U.S.
It is reccomended to purchase your federally compliant driver’s license or ID at least a month before the October 1st, 2020 deadline. Driver’s licenses and ID’s now come in the mail, and if you will be flying you will need your compliant license or ID before the due date, as the TSA hasn’t yet announced whether they’ll be accepting the printout given in the agency as acceptable ID to fly.
The Ohio BMV offers both Standard Driver License ID Cards and newly Compliant Driver License ID Cards. Both Compliant and Standard cards allow you to prove your identity for tasks like buying alcohol, obtaining social services, or registering to vote. Only a driver's license can authorize the operation of a motor vehicle.
To purchase a Standard Driver License ID Card, applicants must provide proof of:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Legal presence in the US
- Social Security number
- Ohio street address
To purchase a Compliant Driver License ID Card, applicants must provide proof of:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Legal presence in the US
- Social Security number
- Ohio street address – TWO documents, from different sources, proving Ohio street address that are listed on the Acceptable Document List are required for proof of Ohio residency.
Please visit the Ohio BMV website for a full checklist of acceptable documents.
