Adoptive families come from a wide variety of economic backgrounds, cultures, religions, lifestyles and races. In fact, your situation could be ideal for adopting. If you have been thinking about adoption, but haven’t taken the first step, please consider taking action after learning the basics on this page.

Consider the Need in our County

There are usually 100 or more children available for adoption in Montgomery County. Most of them are age 10 or older, and some are in sibling groups. Our waiting children have a great variety of talents and interests.

Many of our children have behavioral challenges due to trauma they have experienced in their lives. It is important to show acceptance, patience and commitment as issues are addressed. Throughout the adoption process, though, you are not alone. We offer many supports for both children and parents.

Adoptive Parents Are:

  • Married, single, divorced or widowed
  • A home owner or renter
  • With or without children of their own
  • Age 21 or older
  • Have income to meet household needs -- employed or not
  • Committed to caring for children as a positive role model

The Process:

  • Adoptive parents must complete a 36-hour training session. It is free, and sessions are offered during evenings and weekends. If you are married or with a domestic partner, both parties must complete the training.
  • Home study with a Home Assessor is required
  • Must provide financial information and references
  • Criminal background checks required for all adult household members

How Long Does It Take?

  • Adoption home study takes approximately four to six months
  • A youth must be placed in a home for a minimum of six months before the court will hold a hearing for finalization.

How Much Does It Cost?
Children Services imposes no fees for adoption services, but legal and court fees must be paid. These costs vary, but they can be well over $1,000. Assistance may be available to help if you qualify.
