Moving can be a traumatic experience, but it doesn't have to be that way for your child. Here are some tips to minimize the stress of moving to a new place:

  • Start by videotaping your new home and neighborhood, so your child can get familiar with their new surroundings.
  • Have a special box for your child's favorite clothes and toys. Tell the movers to load this last and unload it first, so your child won't be separated from their "things" too long.
  • Make sure your child has addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of current friends, so they can stay in touch with old friends, while making new ones.
  • Send some mail to your child at your new address, so they will have something waiting for them when they move in.
  • When arriving at your new home, set up your child's room first. This gives them a chance to get familiar with the new home. It also gives them a place to play and relax while you unpack the rest of the house.
  • When finished, take a family walk around your new neighborhood. This will help you unwind and will also give you a chance to meet new neighbors.
  • Get familiar with where the child's school is, and where any parks or playgrounds might be.
  • Once settled, invite your immediate neighbors over, so your child has a chance to get to know them and meet new friends.
