How can I protect myself from being skimmed?

While it is typically impossible to know for sure if there is a card skimmer inside of a pump, there are several tips that can be followed to protect yourself from being skimmed:

  • Use a credit card instead of a debit card
  • Avoid pumps that appear to have been tampered with: pumps with open doors, wires hanging out, broken security seals
  • Check our list of gold seal stations to see which locations have installed additional security measures
  • Paying inside with cash is a surefire way to ensure that you will not be skimmed at the gas pump
