In 2014, the U.S. Department of Justice and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the creation of the Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science (OSAC). The purpose of OSAC was to review current forensic science standards for technical soundness and identify any gaps that could be addressed with new or updated standard documents. The OSAC is comprised of subcommittees covering all of the specific forensic disciplines (e.g., toxicology, seized drugs, latent prints, and firearms). Working with organizations that develop standard documents (e.g., ASB, ASTM), OSAC has created a registry of high-quality, technically sound standards for forensic science. These standards have passed a rigorous review process and define minimum requirements, standard protocols, or best practices to ensure that results from crime laboratories are reliable, valid, and reproducible.
The Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory recognizes the importance of adhering to these guidelines and has chosen to formally implement each of the relevant documents on the OSAC Registry. Learn more about the OSAC Registry.
