Things to Know if You Are a Victim of Sexual Assault
- Call the police (911 or the agency where the crime occurred)
- Do not shower, bathe, or change clothes
- Seek medical attention at an emergency room
- Try to remain calm
It is important to know that medical attention may be necessary even if you do not feel that you have suffered any specific injury. Also, a police report should be made even if you are uncertain about whether or not you want to pursue your complaint. An Advocate will be able to answer your questions and provide information about your possible choices.
The Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office, Victim / Witness Division has developed a booklet, Helping to Heal - A Guide to Recovery for Victims of Sexual Assault, Their Family and Friends (PDF)
