What is the SMART Project?

The Montgomery County Sewer Modernization and Revitalized Treatment (SMART) project ensures our existing wastewater infrastructure remains in optimal condition to continue servicing our community for years to come. One way to do this is to build large, industrial pumps at our Dryden Road facility. These pumps will transport more than 70 million gallons of wastewater per day to our Western Regional Water Reclamation Facility in West Carrollton.

There, a new pre-treatment facility will be built. This facility will feature large, industrial screens to divert large materials including wipes, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, children's toys, and more out of the wastewater stream.

Another aspect of the SMART Project is to move our existing Environmental Laboratory downtown, to our County Administration building.

Montgomery County officially broke ground on the project in May 2022. You can read more about the groundbreaking in this Dayton Daily News article.

What is currently at the Dryden Road facility? What will happen to it?

The building will continue to be owned by the County, however, Environmental Services will no longer operate our laboratory, septage hauling facility, or RV dump stations there.

Why move the laboratory downtown?

Parts of the building feature aging equipment that is more costly to upgrade and maintain than to replace it altogether. The building itself requires repairs which would involve money being spent on an already-aged building.

You can read more about the lab's move to downtown in a recently-published Dayton Daily News Article.
