Mouse Count by Ellen Stoll Walsh
Sat. September 15, 2012, 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.
Mouse Count (Grades Pre K-1) is a story about a slithery snake who finds ten sleeping mice that he thinks will make a delicious meal. He pops them into a jar "one, two, three." But, being greedy, he sees just one more hidden in the grass and goes to collect it. The ten captured mice outsmart him, however, and "ten, nine, eight " uncount themselves as they scramble from the jar and run home, safe and sound once again. Teachers will create props and a storytelling center to use in retelling the story, and learn about supplemental pre-reading activities and curriculum connections in mathematics and science.
Big Earth, Little Me by Thom Wiley
Sat. September 15, 2012, 12:00 – 2:30 p.m.
Big Earth Little Me (Grades Pre K - 2) is a picture book that empowers young readers by teaching 10 simple, everyday ways to save the world! The text on each page is simple and short, but packs a big punch with empowering "I can" phrases that will make little ones feel like they can make a difference. For extra fun there are flaps throughout the book that kids love to peek behind! Teachers will create props and a storytelling center to use in retelling the story. MCSWD will provide other books and resources about recycling and environmental responsibility.

This education series is offered by Montgomery County Solid Waste District at no cost to Montgomery County teachers.
