Winston of Churchill: One Bear's Battle Against Global Warming is a fictional story with an ecological message about global warming, a problem created when humans burn fossil fuels for energy causing carbon in the atmosphere to act as a blanket, trapping heat and warming the planet. The story is about Churchill, Manitoba, polar bear capitol, and a popular winter tourists destination to watch the polar bears. This year, the tourists find that Winston, a smart, fierce, brave bear, notices that their icy home is slowly melting away. This funny story draws attention to the polar bears' plight and helps children understand that in the face of global warming, everyone must do their part by saving energy. Teachers will create props and a storytelling center to use in retelling the story. Participants will receive a copy of the book and other resources to use in teaching their students about saving energy.
