Interest Level:Pre-K - 2; Genre: Fiction

Hey, That's Not Trash?: But Which Bin Does it Go In? is a fictional story that provides the reader with not only the opportunity to learn the difference between trash and recyclables, but to be able to sort press-out pieces in the shape of everyday objects (e.g. plastics, paper, metal) into the correct bins into three compartments on the front cover. Young readers learn the difference between trash and recyclables in this new, interactive format. Fun, rhyming text shows that every day paper, plastic and metal trash can serve a bigger purpose when they are recycled! During this workshop, teachers will learn how to integrate reading with environmental science. Teachers will create props and a storytelling center to use in retelling the story. Participants will receive a copy of the book and other resources to use in teaching their students about recycling and solid waste.

Featuring the Book:Garbage and Recycling by Chris Oxlade
Interest Level:K - 1; Genre: Nonfiction

Garbage and Recycling is one of the books in the series, How Does My Home Works?, where each book examines a key utility used by the average household. This book looks at garbage and recycling, and examines what they are, what happens to garbage when it is taken away, and environmental issues arising from the ways we dispose of garbage and choose to recycle in our homes. The texts emphasize why we should conserve natural resources and reduce waste. Information is presented in a question-and-answer format and follows a logical order. Each title has an activity that students can use to track and reduce their energy use or increase recycling. Teachers will create props to use in retelling the story. Participants will receive a copy of the book and other resources to use in teaching their students about solid waste and recycling.
