Workshop Registration

Our House is Round by Yolanda Kondonassis
Saturday, April 5, 2014, 8:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Our House is Round is a fictional story illuminating the concept of global connection and environmental cause and effect. This book teaches the “whys” behind earth conservation in a colorful, positive way that encourages maturity, responsibility, and problem-solving discussion. The author encourages young children to answer questions about their planet and discuss the issues of global warming, recycling, energy conservation, planting trees, and more. Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund, said this is “the perfect children’s introduction to environmental issues.” During this workshop, teachers will learn how to integrate reading with environmental science. Teachers will create props and a storytelling center to use in retelling the story. Participants will receive a copy of the book and other resources to use in teaching their students about reducing, reusing and recycling solid waste.
Eco Art! by Laurie Carlson
Saturday, April 5, 2014, 12:00 – 2:30 p.m.
Eco Art! is a comprehensive resource book of "how to" projects that begins with how to make art-and-craft supplies from natural objects and materials, and ends with recycling and composting. The scope and organization of projects includes step-by-step, single-page directions with drawings that are clear and relate well to the text. The level of difficulty of each activity is indicated with a symbol, and a clock indicates when more than one hour is needed to finish a project (most require less than an hour). During this workshop, teachers will choose one or more projects from the resource book to use in teaching about recycling and environmental awareness. Teachers will develop a lesson that includes the select project as a product created by a student or team of students. Participants will receive a copy of the book and other resources.

This education series is offered by Montgomery County Solid Waste District at no cost to Montgomery County teachers.
