DRG3 Green Business Certification Program Overview:
The Green Business Certification Program is a voluntary program designed to help businesses take basic green measures to reduce their ecological footprint, reduce their energy and resource use, and save money in the process. Earning Green Business Certification indicates that you are part of an innovative leadership movement to green your business operations and help transition to a sustainable future.
Businesses, government buildings, schools, non-profit organizations, houses of worship, home offices, and manufacturing, just to name a few, qualify to become green certified and receive program benefits. Virtually any type of business is included. When you read the word “business,” know that it includes a wide variety.
Program emphasis is on day to day operations and policies; making small changes to everyday routines and using effective strategies to save on commercial energy and resources that could potentially save you thousands of dollars a year. The application is based on a checklist of actions in six categories:
- General Standards for All Businesses
- Solid Waste Reduction & Recycling
- Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
- Energy Conservation
- Water Conservation
- Pollution Prevention
Although certain checklist actions are required within each category, the certification process is very flexible, allowing businesses to choose from a broad range of actions. Businesses can also develop their own innovative actions that are consistent with the program’s principles. Certification includes on-site verification for 5% of applications (randomly chosen). The auditing process might occur after certification. If non compliance issues are discovered through the auditing, a grace period of 6 months will be given to the business for compliance.
