Commissioner Judy Dodge Spearheads Hunger Awareness Effort

Release Date

File:

Summary:
Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge is spearheading a local effort to call attention to the perils of hunger and poverty, especially for children.  "There are approximately 30-thousand children living in poverty in Montgomery County.  That is simply unacceptable," said Commissioner Dodge.

On Friday, June 5, 2009, County Commissioners along with the Montgomery County Department of Job and Family Services, Children's Hunger Alliance and the Montgomery County Food Assistance Program Outreach Coalition held a "Walk in My Shoes" hunger simulation that encouraged participants to put themselves in the shoes of those living in poverty.  In 2009, federal poverty guidelines define a family of four with an income of $22,050 living at the poverty level.

"Unless you have experienced poverty first hand, it is hard to imagine what it is like to make difficult day-to-day choices when it comes to feeding your family," noted Commissioner Dodge.  "The simulation conducted for area community leaders really shows how challenging it is for impoverished families to shop for a week's worth of food for their families on a very limited budget.  Hunger and poverty also significantly impact a child's ability to live a healthy, happy and productive life."

The federal government offers several programs to help struggling families including the Summer Food Service Program, which provides free nutritious lunches at 134 sites in the county for children, ages 1 – 18, regardless of income level.  Although more than 6,000 children have taken advantage of this program since 2003, approximately 80 percent of low income children in Montgomery County do not take part in the program.

Commissioner Dodge added that, "Participating in the Food Assistance Program and the USDA Child Nutrition programs can assist families lessen their burdens and stretch their resources further to develop children who thrive despite their economic environment.  By raising awareness, we hope more people will take advantage of existing food programs so that more children can be reached, but the ultimate goal is to eliminate childhood hunger."
