Press Conference Concerning NCR Announcement

Release Date
: Jun 2, 2009
File: NCR Letters

Summary:
June 2, 2009 Press Conference
Montgomery County Commissioner Dan Foley's comments concerning NCR's decision to move its corporate headquarters from Dayton:

"Over the past several years, Montgomery County and the City of Dayton have aggressively tried to keep NCR's World Headquarters here in Dayton.  In fact, I have several letters here documenting our efforts beginning in late 2004.  By early 2005, we believed we had a deal that would have retained 2,100 jobs and created an additional 300.

Unfortunately, when former NCR CEO Mark Hurd left the company, all talks stopped.

Our attempts back then to resume discussions with current CEO Bill Nuti were ignored.  We have repeatedly asked to meet with him over the past two or three years.  All those requests were rejected.

Earlier this year, I joined Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin, Lt. Governor Lee Fisher and State Senator Jon Husted in a meeting with NCR officials.  Due to certain actions by NCR, we were very concerned that the company was planning to move its world headquarters from Dayton.  We offered to help assemble a package of incentives.  A follow-up meeting was scheduled, but NCR cancelled that meeting and until today, has refused to even have a conversation with the community that gave birth to their company.

Let me be very clear.  In order to have a discussion, there must be at least two parties at the table.  NCR refused to come to the table.

NCR would not even allow Dayton to enter the competition.  That's what is so disappointing and frustrating.  NCR and Dayton are tied together through a wonderful 125-year history of successful innovation.  NCR has been good to this community and the people of this community have been good to NCR.  They helped build this company into a giant and helped it create the products needed to see it through 125 years of technological changes.

At the very least, NCR should have given the community of its birth a fair chance to compete.  We deserved to be treated better."
