Be Prepared When Your Power is Restored
|
Release Date: Sep 22, 2008
File:
Summary:
Montgomery County is teaming up with the Dayton Fire Department to provide life-saving tips on things you need to check before the power comes back on.
Are you really prepared for electric restoration?
Power restoration efforts to neighborhoods, houses and individual businesses show that not everyone is ready. The City of Dayton Fire Department and Montgomery County EMA encourage everyone to prepare for power restoration by checking both the interior and exterior of their facilities.
Outside: Walk around and look for wind damage, including light fixtures, signs, siding and wires pulled away from the building; siding, trees or even metal fences touching wires are a hazard. If observed, do not touch. Block off the area and contact your utility with the address and information.
Inside: Make sure that machinery and power equipment gets switched off. Double check electric stoves and all home appliances to ensure they are switched off in case power is restored when you are not home. Many people are switching off their circuit breakers to protect against irregular service when power is first restored. Not all damage has been identified and there are still trees and branches falling this week causing more damage and interruptions.
We encourage everyone to check that your smoke detectors have good batteries and to continue practicing enhanced fire safety by not leaving candles unattended or close to combustible materials or surfaces.
