Summary:
As a community we have all been through a lot since the recent wind storm. Power is out, there is debris everywhere, and things are just not normal. Many of us are concerned about the emotional health of our friends and families.
The Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board for Montgomery County, a partner in Montgomery County's Human Services system, knows that many people feel somewhat "out of sorts", "grumpy" or a little "on edge". Many of these feelings are a normal reaction to the abnormal events of the past few days and are not symptoms of mental illness.
If you are a victim of the storm, you are urged to take the following steps to remain emotionally healthy during this time of crisis.
Top ten ways to take care of yourself after the Wind Storm:
1. Stay calm. Things will get better. Focus on family, friends, and your personnel faith.
2. Be willing to accept help from others. Don't be afraid to ask for or receive help from others. People who care about you often feel helpless. They want to be of assistance. If others ask what they can do to help, let them know what you need and let them help you.
3. Share your story with others. Sharing your feelings and your experience during this disaster will help you feel better.
4. Allow yourself to be feel. Don't judge your feelings by how others around you are reacting. Everyone deals with the stress of our situation differently.
5. Pace yourself. You will not be able to get everything done at once.
6. Take breaks. Take time off from cares, worries, and home repairs. Engage in recreation and relaxation. Getting away from home for a few hours can help.
7. Pay attention to your health. A good diet and adequate sleep are needed. Relaxation exercises may help if you have difficulty sleeping. Remember your physical and mental health are as important as your environmental health. Make sure you are taking medications as prescribed, eating properly, and drinking plenty of water.
8. Be patient. Many people were affected by the recent events. It will take time to return to normal.
9. Organize yourself. Make a list of important phone numbers (insurance company, emergency assistance, physician, pharmacy, etc.). Track your receipts. Start a file to track activities related to the storm. This information may be helpful as assistance becomes available.
10. Don't be afraid to seek professional help. Recognize that seeking professional counseling doesn't mean you are weak, inadequate or disturbed. In Montgomery County you can get help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling CrisisCare 937-224-4646.
