On December 30, 2008 the Commissioners recognized the Archbishop Alter High School Varsity Football Team for winning the Division IV State Football Championship in November, 2008. Present to accept the proclamation were Coach Ed Domsitz and two of the 2009 team captains Cody Byers and John Doncaster.
Commissioners Judy Dodge, Dan Foley, Debbie Lieberman, and Auditor Karl Keith kicked off the local Home 4 the Holidays event and encouraged people to visit the Adopt-a-Thon on December 13th at the Dayton Mall. Home 4 the Holidays is an annual nationwide adoption event sponsored by IAMS. Their goal is to find homes for one million homeless pets this holiday season. Animal Resource Center Director Mark Kumpf, Humane Society Director Brian Weltge, SISCA Interim Director Pat Whitney, and IAMS representative, Khris Parlett were present as well as a number of dogs and kittens who were looking for homes.

The Commissioners congratulated Mark Kumpf, Director of the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center, for receiving the 2008 Outstanding Contribution to Animal Welfare Award from the United Kingdom National Dog Warden Association.
The Commissioners joined the winners of the 2009 Environmental Calendar Contest at a reception prior to the commission meeting where the winners were formally recognized for their accomplishments.
The Commissioners recognized Mary Anne Nelson, from Job and Family Services Children Services Division, for being one of this year's recipients of the Artemis Center's Peacekeeper Awards for her contribution toward keeping victims of domestic violence safe.

She has been learning to develop, frame, and market her photos through her work skills program which is coordinated between Stivers, The Adult Transition Program and We Care Arts (a non-profit organization that offers opportunities to adults with disabilities). After hearing an update on progress being made by the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Task Force, the Montgomery County Commissioners recognized this International FASD Awareness Day by proclaiming September 9, 2008 as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Day in Montgomery County. On August 13, 2008 the Commissioners hosted the Awards Program of the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission where Grassroots Initiative Mini-Grants were awarded to East End Community Center to support their Hispanic Student Support Services Program, Central State University to support the Latino Youth Initiative Program, and Casa Amiga at Tecumseh, YMCA in support of a Bilingual Information and Referral Center. Commissioners accepted an "Award of Excellence" from the International Concrete Repair Institute which was awarded to Montgomery County Department of Public Works in recognition of the Montgomery County underground garage restoration for excellence in longevity of repairs.
