Montgomery County Athletes Bring Home Medals

On Tuesday, October 19, 2010, the Montgomery County Commissioners recognized three outstanding athletes who represented the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities at the Special Olympics 2010 USA National Games in Nebraska in July.

Johnny Blackburn and Jonathan Durham played on the Ohio Softball Team and took home the gold! The Ohio team was undefeated against all of their opponents including teams from Illinois, Iowa, Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida. The championship game was then held between Ohio and the team representing Illinois. With a combination of strong offense and spectacular defense, the team from Ohio prevailed by a score of 15 to 0.

Michael Huff played on the Ohio Bocce Team that placed second.

47 states and 2800 athletes were represented in the games. Opening ceremonies were held at the University of Nebraska and police officers from various states passed the torch to ignite the flame to begin the games.
