Montgomery and Miami Counties Partner to Save $20 Million

On April 30, 2013, Montgomery and Miami County officials announced a joint solid waste transportation and disposal agreement that will save more than $15 million for Montgomery County and $5 for Miami County over the next five years.

“The Montgomery County Commission is committed to exploring any possible tax-saving collaboration with other local governments. We all serve our citizens better if we work together to save money.  This agreement shows the tangible benefits.   Our citizens save $15 million dollars and Miami County citizens enjoy substantial savings, too. This is how governments can work smarter,” said Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge.

Compared to the previous agreement, the new agreement will allow for up to 85,000 tons of MontgomeryCounty solid waste to be disposed of annually at the Stony Hollow Landfill, which is locally operated by Waste Management, Inc. The remaining combined 285,000 tons of solid waste from Montgomery and Miami Counties will be disposed at the Cherokee Run Landfill, operated by Republic Services, Inc. inBellefontaine,Ohio.

“This will greatly reduce the transportation costs associated with disposing of solid waste at more distant landfills, and it will decrease pollution as well,” said Miami County Commissioner John W. O’Brien.
