Juvenile Court to Unveil Mural - April 1, 2016

On Friday, April 1, 2016 the HAALO Program will be dedicating its first mural of the year at the community garden on Pittsburg Ave. in Dayton.  This mural has been executed by youth artists involved in the HAALO (Helping Adolescents Achieve Long-term Objectives) Program.  Under the leadership of Judge Nick Kuntz and Judge Anthony Capizzi, Montgomery County Juvenile Court created the HAALO Program in partnership with K12/TEJAS Gallery to expose Court-involved youth to different mediums of art while also teaching them life skills that will assist them in being successful members of our community.  Arts exposure can be an integral asset building tool for our young people; from critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills to creativity, motivation, and patience, the therapeutic process of the HAALO Program has endless benefits for the young people involved.   The youth artists work with a local artist and Court staff Brittini Long and Shirley Tucker, to plan and execute these amazing murals.  The art that these young people produce is displayed on vacant buildings throughout the City of Dayton.  The HAALO program continues to inspire all the youth involved by giving them a chance to follow their dreams and develop their strengths while instilling a sense of responsibility for one’s community.

Murals have shown to be an effective way to combat blight and vandalism, as well as encourage neighbors to take responsibility for their community.  This particular mural is a partnership with New Path Outreach and will lend to the environment in the Ft. McKinley neighborhood.  The program is also supported by the Juvenile Court Foundation and Keep Montgomery County Beautiful.  The HAALO Program has the potential to beautify the city “one block at a time” while changing the lives of many youth who would have otherwise went uninspired. We hope that everyone will come to the community garden on Pittsburg Ave. at Salem Ave. on April 1, 2016 at 4 pm to help dedicate the new artwork and meet the intrepid young artists who made it happen!
