Keowee Street Bridge Closure - December 11

Montgomery County Engineer Paul Gruner is announcing that work on the replacement of the Keowee Street Bridge over the Great Miami River has begun.   The contractor, Eagle Bridge Company, has tentatively set Monday, December 11, as the beginning of the road closures, depending on weather.   Construction of the new bridge and associated road work will last until September 1, 2019.  Keowee Street will be closed from Stanley Avenue to Embury Park Road.   North Dixie Drive will be closed from Embury Park Road to Drill Avenue.   The detour route is Stanley Avenue to I-75 to Needmore Road.   Also, Embury Park Road will be closed from Kearns Avenue to Elkhart Avenue.   The detour route for Embury Park Road is Kearns Avenue to Drill Avenue/Ome Avenue to Elkhart Avenue.  Keowee Street will not be closed until the Helena Street Bridge over the Great Miami River is open to traffic.  Access to businesses on Keowee Street, North Dixie Drive and Embury Park Road will be kept open at all times.

Visitors to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery can, when coming from south of the Keowee Street Bridge, travel Helena Street to Riverside Drive to Ridge Avenue to DeWeese Parkway.   Visitors coming from north of the Keowee Street Bridge can use Siebenthaler Avenue to Ridge Avenue to DeWeese Parkway.

Eagle Bridge Company will construct a detour route for the Great Miami River Recreational Trail prior to commencing demolition of the bridge.  This short detour will route trail users up a paved ramp to the top of the levee, across Keowee Street at the north end of the bridge, and back down a paved ramp to the Trail, a total distance of about one thousand feet.   Trail users will be separated from traffic by concrete barriers when crossing Keowee Street.  The detour is expected to be completed in the next three to four weeks, and detour signing will be erected by the contractor when it is ready for use.  The Trail detour will remain in place until the bridge is completed.

Also during bridge construction, boat traffic on the Great Miami River will not be able to cross under the bridge.   The portage route for boaters is the same as the detour for the Great Miami River Recreational Trail described above.   Advance signage for boaters will be erected by the contractor.
