Real Estate Tax Refund Information

If the property tax records indicate an overpayment of real estate taxes, one or more parties may be eligible for a refund. Overpayments can occur for several reasons. Often they are the result of recent ownership changes where both the previous and current owners make payment toward the same tax charges. Sometimes they are the results of adjustments to the tax charges made after the billing has occurred and payments submitted.

Refunds may be distributed in two ways.  First, the overpayment be applied to that property's next tax bill.  Secondly, a refund check be issued to the payer of record. Note that check refund requests require the Treasurer's Office to verify the person or company that made the payment resulting in the overpayment.

Proof of Identity

To resolve an overpayment issue proof of payment must be established. The Treasurer's office will perform the research to satisfy this requirement. If additional proof of payment information is needed (such as a copy of a cancelled check or a paid stamped receipt) the Treasurer's Office will contact the eligible party. Once the Treasurer's Office verifies the overpayment and the party eligible for the refund, a request to issue a check in the amount of the overpayment will be made. Due to the high volume of refund requests, refunds will be issued within 45-60 days of the refund request.

Instructions for Submission:

1. Contact the Treasurer's Office by fax or mail regarding your request to
   resolve a refund issue.
2. Indicate refund preference: apply the refund to the property's next tax bill or have a
   refund check issued.
3. If a check is requested please provided the name desired on the check and desire mailing location.
