Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith named Meijer as the winner of the 2015 Excellence in Scanning Award. Keith presented the award to Meijer managers from their four local stores on Thursday, May 21st at a Meijer business meeting held at their Wilmington Pike location.
Keith presents the Excellence in Scanning Award every year to a local business that demonstrates a commitment to accurate pricing. In the past year, county inspectors conducted price verifications to confirm that item prices matched prices at the checkout. More than 330 retailers earned perfect scores including 3 of the 4 Meijer stores.
“Technology has had a big impact on the work we do. Scanning accuracy of all retailers has improved 15% in the last 11 years,” Keith said. “In 1988, our inspectors checked 10 locations and scanned around 800 items. In 2014, we ran tests on nearly 500 retailers and close to 30,000 items. This combination of technology and retailers becoming more accustomed to abiding by regulated standards have driven this improvement.”
According to Keith, county weights and measures inspectors help to ensure the integrity of the marketplace for both consumers and retailers by testing everyday products such as groceries, cleaning supplies, hardware and other household goods.
The Auditor’s Office employs three full-time inspectors who tested and certified over 2,000 scales and more than 7,000 gas pumps in 2014.
During the award presentation, Keith praised Meijer for promoting a high standard of accuracy. “I want to commend Meijer for working to improve the consistency of their price verification score because in the past some of their stores did not pass,” Keith said. “But through dedication from their stores managers, all Meijer stores have received passing scores since 2009. Of the four area Meijer stores, three received a perfect score while the other scored a passing 99.5% in 2014.”
Founded in 1934 by Hendrik Meijer in Greenville, Michigan, Meijer is the 27th largest retailer in the country.
