    Commission Updates

    AUGUST 2010

August 24, 2010, Bob Gruhl, Director, Montgomery County Child Support Enforcement Agency (CSEA), announced that August is Child Support Awareness Month.  Activities include agency and community information booths, a Children’s Coloring Contest, a CSEA Annual Training Day, and engaging in a Marketing Campaign to inform the community about the services offered by the agency.  He noted that this is the 35th anniversary of Child Support. This law, which became law in 1975, provided a shift from welfare cost recovery to a family support program. Mr. Gruhl explained that over 1 million Ohio children receive support and 95% of support is paid electronically. Montgomery County collected over $101 million last year in child support. There are currently 61,534 open cases involving 114,254 parents in Montgomery County.  Along with other county agencies, the CSEA is facing challenges due to the uncertain Federal fiscal environment.   Mr. Gruhl provided a brief overview of their Strategic Initiatives.  Mrs. Feldman noted that although it is a Federal, State and local program it receives mostly federal funding.   By earning incentives, we are able to reduce our local share.  Mr. Gruhl added that it is a performance based system and those agencies that perform at peak levels are rewarded.  He was pleased to report that Montgomery County has a $9.47 Cost Effectiveness Ratio which means that for every dollar they expend, $9.47 goes into the community.   That is $2.50 above the state average and $4.68 above the federal average.  For additional information contact the Customer Call Center at 225-4600. The commissioners presented Mr. Gruhl with a proclamation and thanked him and his staff for their ongoing efforts to ensure that our community’s children receive the financial support which they are entitled.

On August 17, 2010 the commissioners recognized Montgomery County Environmental Services for receiving Peak Performance Awards from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) in recognition of their complete and consistent National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit compliance during the calendar year 2009.   NACWA recognizes public wastewater treatment facilities for their outstanding compliance records.  Montgomery County Water Services’ Eastern Regional Water Reclamation Facility earned the Gold Award for having 100 percent compliance with its NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit for the entire 2009 calendar year.   The Silver Award was presented to the Western Regional Water Reclamation Facility for having received no more than five NPDES permit violations in 2009.

On August 17, 2010 the IT/GIS Service Group of employees were also recognized because Montgomery County Environmental Services was one of over 150 organizations selected from approximately 300,000 to receive a 2010 Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the 30th Annual 2010 Esri International User Conference.  The winning organizations received this honor for their vision, leadership, hard work, and innovative use of Esri's geographic information system (GIS) technology.  The Water Services’ enterprise GIS database contains data for all the department’s facilities and all work related to these assets.   The technology is used by the customer service and permits staff along with internal applications that serve the over 150 employees within the department.
