| DECEMBER 2007 COMMISSION UPDATES |
- The Commissioners accepted a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and recognized the staff of the Office of Management and Budget for their hard work. This program has been promoting the preparation of high quality budget documents since 1984 and more than 1,100 governments (state and local) participate in the program each year. This is the 24th year that Montgomery County has received this award.
- The Commissioners heard a presentation on the Youth and Amateur Sports Task Force final report. The task force was established in July 2007 and has developed a number of recommended actions to reach their goal of at least a 20% increase in the number of visitors attracted by youth and amateur competitive sporting events in Montgomery County by the year 2010.
- Montgomery County Administrator Deborah Feldman provided an overview of the proposed 2008 budget at the December 11, 2007 commission meeting. Complete details are available for review.
- The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Disciples Youth Drill Team presented the commissioners plaques to thank them for their support.
- The commissioners recognized the 2008 Environmental Calendar Contest Winners which was sponsored by the Montgomery County Solid Waste District in conjunction with the Montgomery County Sanitary Engineering Department. The 17 winners, students in grades K-12, were selected from more than 750 entries from over 40 schools plus some home school participants. To obtain a copy of the calendar call 225-4999.
- Commissioners congratulated the City of Miamisburg for being named "Best Hometown" for the southwest region of the state by Ohio Magazine. The recognition was based on six criteria: Community Spirit, Education, Entertainment, Health & Safety, Business Environment, and Culture & History. "Great things are happening in Miamisburg!"

- The November 20, 2007 Board of County Commissioners meeting was held at the Jefferson Township offices. Several times a year they hold the commission meeting at other jurisdictional locations to bring local government closer to the people.
- Commissioners Judy Dodge and Dan Foley recognized Allen E. Winters, a Jefferson Township firefighter/paramedic, as a Montgomery County Hero. Although off duty at the time, when he came upon an auto accident with flames coming from one of the vehicles he pulled two victims from the automobiles.
- The Commissioners received a preview of the 2008 Dog Licensing Promotion that is about to begin. 2008 dog licenses will be on sale from December 1st through January 31st. Licenses can be purchased at many locations around the county as well as through the mail or online at www.mcohio.org/dogs.
- The 8th Annual Adoption Event Iams® Home 4 the Holidays runs from November 5th through January 3rd. Activities to promote the adoption of dogs and cats will be ongoing throughout this period with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and SICSA in cooperation with the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center. An Adopt-a-thon will be held December 15th at the Dayton Mall from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Commissioners heard the Master Plan goals, saw the conceptual design, and were updated on the project status of Phase II of the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority's Wright Stop Plaza.
- The Commissioners heard a presentation about the MCCS Family Visitation Center. The Center offers a supportive, safe, and comfortable environment for children and their families to spend valuable time together preserving and strengthening their relationships.

- Commissioners heard a presentation about ComCare, a program supported by the Human Services Levy. The program provides in-home services to individuals who are frail and elderly and need support to remain in their homes. It was created to help seniors who were not eligible for the PASSPORT program. The program is administered by the local Area Agency on Aging.
- Commissioners heard an update from Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County concerning their Health Centers, Communicable Disease Clinics, Nutrition, Home Services, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Environmental Health, Communicable Disease Surveillance, and Public Health Emergency Preparedness.
- Commissioners proclaimed October 2007 as National Arts and Humanities Month in Montgomery County. They heard presentations about the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District and The Greater Dayton Arts Community.
- Commissioners recognized Chris Hess from Public Works and Steve Walker from Sanitary Engineering for their excellent performance at the National Solid Waste Association North America (SWANA) Equipment Rodeo Competition in September. Chris placed second and Steve fourth in the loader category.
- Commissioners met two families whose lives have been touched by the (Parent and Child Enrichment) PACE Program provided by the Montgomery County Board of Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities. The program emphasizes play and functional activities, the curriculum centers on developing the child's ability to communicate, social and emotional skills, physical development, self-help skills and parent education.
- The Montgomery County Water Line Tapping Teams from the Sanitary Department were recognized for their accomplishments at the AWWA State Conference last month. The Men's Team earned fifth place while the Women's Team won the state competition with a record-setting time of 3.09 minutes. The Women's Team has been invited to go to Atlanta in June 2008 for the National Competition.
- October is Energy Awareness Month and the public was invited to be part of the Ohio Solar Tour 2007 which is being held October 5th and 6th in regions around the state. The Dayton Tour includes tours at the Girl Scouts Urban Campus, Heapy Engineering, Montgomery County Administration Building, Madison Lakes Park, Skystream Wind Turbine, and Dull Homestead Farm. - Commissioners received information about Rebuilding Together Dayton which is the only organization in the Miami Valley dedicated to rehabbing owner-occupied homes for low-income homeowners, including the elderly on poverty-level incomes, at no cost. Through the continued support of Human Services Levy Frail Elderly funds, in-kind labor and donated materials elderly residents are receiving modification services such as hand rails and wheelchair ramps. - Commissioners heard an update from the Dayton Bombers "AA" Professional Hockey league. The team started 17 years ago and last year they earned the American Conference Championship. Dayton has become a desired destination for young players to launch their careers in professional hockey. The season runs from October through April and is a source of affordable family entertainment. Information about the team can be found at www.daytonbombers.com.

- Major Tom Duperree of The Salvation Army updated the Commissioners on the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center near Webster and Keowee Streets. Recreation facilities, school programs, a worship center, meeting spaces and more will be available to residents. $66 million for the project is granted to the Dayton Salvation Army (half for construction and half to sustain operations.) - Six Montgomery County programs received Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties: Small Business Electronics Recycling, Senior Services Network, Strategic Workforce Planning Initiative, Home 4 the Holidays, Transition Center Marketing, and the Community Report. The commissioners recognized the associated staff. International Association of Business Communicators awarded the Bronze Quill for Human Services Education.
- Commissioners heard an update on the Homeless Solutions Community 10-Year Plan. It's been one year since the Plan was adopted and on September 4th River Commons (formerly Helena Hi-Rise), the first housing project for homeless people, will have its grand opening. They distributed a list of household items that citizens/organizations can donate to help the new residents make these units their home.

- MAY IS NATIONAL FOSTER CARE MONTH. Job and Family Services, Children's Division, is airing a foster parent recruitment commercial. They are also encouraging people to become mentors and to hire foster children. View Commercial
- PUBLIC HEALTH UPDATE. The Combined Health District has developed new Mission, Vision, and Brand Platform Statements. The agency will now be known as "Public Health". Public Health Presentation
- The commissioners recognized the Risk Management Department for receiving an Achievement Award from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation. We had a reduction in Compensation Claims of more than 25% during 2006. The total number of lost work days was reduced by 27% and total number of allowed claims went down 12%. - The Commissioners viewed an interactive website that encourages children to conserve water. The website (http://www.deweyandsplash.com/intro.html) contains information and games as well as a section for parents and teachers.
- The Miami Conservancy District provided information about the Drive Less Live More campaign running from April 30 to June 15th which is designed to raise awareness of – and encourage the use of – alternative transportation throughout the Dayton region. Residents can go to www.drivelesslivemore.org for information on activities such as Bike to Work Day on May 18th and a contest to reward people for taking steps toward trying other transportation options like bikes, walking, taking the bus or carpooling. - The Commissioners received an operational overview of Dayton Metro Housing Authority including an update on demolition, supportive public housing and future initiatives. DMHA Update
- Commissioners heard about the succcess of the Help Me Grow Program, which assists newborns - three year-olds with development and health concerns. Mothers of children in the program attended the meeting to illustrate how the program has helped their families. Help Me Grow Overview Presentation.
- United Rehabilitation Services attended the Commission Meeting to ask for support in the June 20th Rubber Duck Regatta. The UHS helps 3000 residents with disabilities. The Regatta ducks are available for $5 each or 6 for $25.
- Commissioners proclaimed this week as Animal Awareness Week and recognized the amazing efforts of the Animal Resource Center Staff over the past year. Come meet your new best friend at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.
