| Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith's office has accepted 6,040 Board of Revision complaints for tax year 2008, more than doubling the old record of 2,658, set in 2006.
The Board of Revision hears and reviews complaints made by property owners who believe their property has been incorrectly assessed. A representative from the County Commissioner's Office, the Treasurer's Office and the Auditor's Office review these complaints from property owners and issue a decision.
"Due to the economic downturn, this was not unexpected, many property owners feel their homes have depreciated since my office set new values in January 2008," said Auditor Karl Keith. "I am glad to see so many citizens actively involved in the process where they may have a direct impact on government, that input and participation is something we've always encouraged."
The Board of Revision has already begun hearing complaints and will continue to do so throughout the year. "We began Board of Revision hearings earlier than usual to handle the volume and we will give every complaint a fair hearing," said Auditor Keith.
Petitioning property owners will receive at least ten days notice of their scheduled hearing. The hearings, open to the public, are held Monday through Friday between 8:15 and 11:45 and usually last around fifteen minutes.
