    ARC Volunteer Receives National Award

    John Crouch

Montgomery County Animal Resource Center volunteer, John Crouch, has been named the 2014 “Diane Lane Memorial Award” recipient by the National Animal Control Association for outstanding volunteer service.

John’s dedication to the ARC stretches 17 years.  An important part of a successful adoption program is the ability to present a clean, well-groomed dog.  John volunteers full-time each week to bathe and groom the many dogs that come to the ARC.  He came to the shelter without any knowledge of grooming, and worked for a short time with a professional groomer to learn the craft.  John grooms 10 or more dogs a day. The current grooming room was developed with John’s input and is truly his place at the shelter.

According to NACA, the nominee selected to win this award must be someone who is not directly employed in the animal control field, but is a volunteer in animal welfare-related activities. He or she will have demonstrated exceptional dedication or performed outstanding work far beyond the requirements of the volunteer position.

The ARC adopts out thousands of dogs each year. John bathes and grooms all of them before they are moved into the adoption room.  Along with that number, John clips, brushes and bathes other dogs and puppies that come to the shelter in horrific shape.  This is truly a testament to his caring for sheltered animals.

“John truly exemplifies the spirit for which this award was created,” said ARC Director Mark Kumpf.  “There is no doubt that John’s long term commitment to the ARC is reflected in the positive comments we receive from the public about the cleanliness of the shelter and the animals for adoption.”

John travelled to Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday, September 4, 2014 to receive his award at the annual NACA Conference.

In 2010 and 2012, the Montgomery County ARC received the NACA Outstanding Agency Award for its effective training program for personnel, outstanding/innovative public education programs, and active community involvement.
