The following dates have been set for the meetings of the Board of Trustees for 2009. Meetings are held at 4:00 pm on the first Thursday of every other month on the 10th floor of the County Administration Building located at 451 W. Third St., Dayton unless otherwise noted:  February 4, April 2, June 4, August 6, October 1, December 3 (canceled)

Committees meet as necessary and their meeting dates are posted here.

There are no upcoming meetings of the board or its committees. There will be a Press Conference on Monday, November 30, 2009 at 10:00 am to announce funding for 2009-2010. The press conference will be at the Dayton RTA & Cultural Center at 40 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd.


Arts Collage

Mission Statement:
The Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District supports, nurtures, and encourages the development and preservation of arts and culture in Montgomery County with primary funding from the Montgomery County Commission.

The Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District is a special purpose unit of government created under Ohio Law to provide support to arts and cultural organizations and individual artists within Montgomery County, Ohio. Currently, the District allocates $1 million annually to support the arts and cultural heritage of Montgomery County.

Funds are distributed in the following categories. Also provided are links to funding guidelines, procedures, report forms, and applications:

  • Direct Operating Support to eighteen "Major" arts and cultural organizations, through a formula process, having operating budgets of $500,000 or more.  Additionally, support is provided to the Schuster Center.
    Major organizations annually complete the following forms:

  • Fellowships, on a competitive basis, for Individual Artists. Applications for 2010-2011 literary and performing arists will be available in early 2010.
    Current recipients should use the following form at the completion of their Fellowship period:
    Final Report (in Word, same Final Report for everyone regardless of Fellowship year)
  • Artist Contracts for 2009-2010 should be returned to DVAC by November 1, 2009.

  • Special Project grants, awarded on a competitive basis, to small and medium-sized arts and cultural organizations. 2009-2010 funding has already been awarded. Applications for 2010-2011 will be available in the spring of 2010.
  • Current award recipients should use the following forms:
    Final Report (PDF), due 30 days after your event/project
    Revision Form (Word) to be completed whether there are changes or not
    Acknowledgment of Public Funds and Guidelines for Use of County Logo (pdf)
  • Contracts, Revision Forms and the Acknowledgment of Public Funds Form should be signed and returned to MCACD by November 1, 2009.


Inquiries regarding County funding of the arts should be directed to the staff above. This includes general operating support for large organizations, special project grants for small and mid-size organizations as well as individual artist fellowship grants.

Special Projects Award Recipients 

Project Summaries for Projects Taking Place Nov 1, 2008 -October 31, 2009

ABLE Youth Leadership Institute of SNMWDJ:  Kuumba Creativity Workshop:  $4,500
Kuumba will hold a series of workshops in order to educate the community in the traditional perspectives of African drumming, fashion, dance, film, and the healing arts.

 

Bach Society of Dayton: Multimedia Magnificats     $10,000
A multimedia musical performance of the Magnificat with a video projection of visual art relevant to the two musical settings of J.S. Bach's work. The visual art images relating to the Annunciation and Visitation of Mary are provided by the Marian Library at the University of Dayton.  The musical settings include one by J.S. Bach while the second is a contemporary setting by John Rutter.

 

Dayton Playhouse, Inc.: You Theatre       $4,500
An arts education program geared towards bringing children from different cultures and economic backgrounds together for a summer program that combines performing arts, dance, music and all the basic components needed to produce a show.

 

Downtown Dayton Partnership: Urban Nights 2009     $7,125
Urban Nights is a free event that showcases downtown's creative side and our community's strong concentration of arts.

 

City of Dayton/Recreation & Youth Services:      $4,749
Dayton Mayor's Teen Talent Showcase - 2009 
Showcasing and supporting the talented teens in Montgomery County.   

 

Home Based Arts USA: Dayton Dances and Sings Learning Activity Book  $7,000
Activity books that introduce local students, in grades second through fifth, to local arts and cultural resources; activity books will be distributed to public schools & private schools throughout the community.

 

Jazz Advocate:  2009 South Park Jazz and Arts Festival    $8,000
Historic South Park, Inc. & Jazz Advocate will join in a collaborative presentation of the third annual, free to the public, all day Jazz & Arts Festival on Saturday, September 26, 2009.  

 

Kettering Children's Choir: Kettering Children's Choir at the Castle   $6,750
The Choir will participate in a series of workshops and performances of music and culture from the Middle Ages.

 

Learning Tree Farm: Native Americans & Pioneers on the Farm-Living the History $9,000
A program for children that provides academic learning, appreciation for cultural arts, cooperation and respect between the Native Americans and the pioneers in Ohio.

 

McClendon Institute of Learning:  Drama, Drum and Dance Workshop   $6,500
The Institute will present a three-part Drama, Drum and Dance event that includes "Learning through the Lessons of History", a play; The John McClendon Jr.'s Poetry Workshop; and the "Juneteenth" Cultural Celebration, a community-wide event.

 

Miami Valley Jazz Camp:  Jazz Camp Cultural Expression    $5,000
The Camp will provide a series of Jazz learning strategies, classroom instruction in theory and technique, small combo and large ensemble rehearsals, improvisation sessions, instrument specific master classes, and much more.

 

Puerto Rican & Caribbean Organization: Cinco de Mayo & Hispanic Festival  $4,500
Annual Cinco de Mayo celebration and Hispanic Festival will highlight the contribution of Hispanics to the cultural and economic development of the U.S and showcase traditions and folklore.
 

Residence In Praise: Trotwood's Talent & Treasuries –Art Series   $7,233
Presenting a performance/visual arts community series that focuses on the artistic talents in the arts of people who live and work in Trotwood.

 

SMAG Dance Collective, Inc.:  Urban Nutcracker' & Collaboration'   $6,500
Urban Nutcracker,' a unique & diverse Christmas show, in addition, a Collaborative' with non-traditional collaborators will be presented in 2009.

 

Southern Christian Leadership Conference – Dayton: MLK Holiday Celebration $5,029
A project engaging urban youth in the artistic form of instructional and performance music; youth will be joined by a national artist in residency.

 

St. Margaret's Church:  Summer Art Camp      $5,000
A summer camp program that brings together apprentice artists and master artists of diverse backgrounds to explore commonality of cultures through visual and other artistic media.

 

Unified Health Solutions:  Clean Fringe      $10,000
Through education, prevention and intervention this community-wide youth theatre project will use performance to empower teens to make strong, healthy choices.

 

United Irish of Dayton: Dayton Celtic Festival       $5,000
The Celtic Festival will feature a broad range of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh musicians, dancers, and storytellers, who will provide access to the full range of cultural art forms.

 

Vandalia Youth Theatre Company: Youth Production and Teen Production  $9,000
The Theatre will present two separate productions with age groups 5 to 10 years old and 11 to 18 years old.  This year, their productions are Annie, Jr. and Les Miserables.

 

Wright Dunbar Inc.: Wright-Dunbar Cultural ConNEXTions    $6,375
Cultural events and programs throughout the summer of 2009; performing and visual arts will celebrate Dayton's diversity and draw people together in this neighborhood supporting a National Park.

 

YWCA: One Monday Morning Concert Series for Preschoolers    $2,100
A multi-cultural concert series for pre-school children on seven Monday mornings in 2009. In addition, continued outreach to the community will provide additional concerts in the afternoons as interest and scheduling allow.
