Summary:
Keep your pets happy and safe this fourth of July! With the holiday approaching, many are preparing for picnics and festivities. The Animal Resource Center would like to remind everyone to think about pet safety. Here are a few tips for pet owners:

• Loud, crowded public fireworks displays are no place for pets. Please resist the urge to take them with you to celebrate Independence Day. Let them stay in a quiet, safe, escape-proof area.
• Keep matches & lighter fluid out of pets' reach. Certain matches contain chlorates which can damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing.
• Keep picnic foods away from pets as they can cause indigestion and diarrhea. Things like chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be toxic to pets.
• Make sure your pets are wearing collars with current licenses tags and pet identification. Lost & scared pets can't tell a person where they live unless they have proper ID.
• Microchip your pets. This permanent ID cannot be lost or stolen. The Animal Resource Center offers microchip services for $20.
• For pets bothered by loud noise, keep them inside in a quiet room with no windows. Background music playing can help calm them.
• If your pet is lost, call the Animal Resource Center at 898-4457. To reach an officer, select option #1. To review a recorded list of found pets select option #4.
