Analysts: Mike Wathen, Laboratory Supervisor Gary Shaffer Brooke Ehlers Jennifer Watson
The Chemistry Section uses the latest analytical instrumentation to analyze narcotics, blood and urine from DUI offenders, fire scene debris, and suspected bomb debris. Blood and urine samples are analyzed for the presence and amount of ethanol or drugs. In suspected arson cases, instrumentation can detect the presence of accelerants in fire scene debris. Microscopic examination of bomb debris can detect explosive devices and traces of unburned explosive powder. Chemists are also able to determine if a person suspected of discharging a firearm has gunshot residue on his hands.
The section examines approximately 4,000 cases per year -- the majority of which involve drug and/or alcohol analyses. Additional determinations include accelerants, explosives, poisons and other toxic substances.
