Debbie Lieberman has been active in politics and local government since her childhood. After serving her local community and the community at large for many years, Debbie was elected to the Montgomery County Commission in 2004. She was the first Democrat on the Commission in over 10 years and has since been joined by fellow Democrats Judy Dodge and Dan Foley. Together, they have brought a team approach to the leadership of Montgomery County
Debbie arrived in Dayton in 1983 to attend the University of Dayton Law School. She was not new to the area having spent a part of her childhood in Kettering when her father was the Headmaster of Dayton Christian School. Debbie also spent parts of her youth in Indianapolis and St. Petersburg, Florida. Debbie attended Indiana Central University for her undergraduate degree.
After law school, Debbie worked in commercial real estate and with Legal Aid Society of Dayton. In 1991, Debbie joined the Montgomery County Auditor's Office as Director of Real Estate. She served in that position for 10 years before becoming the Chief Deputy Auditor in 2001.
Debbie served the former Randolph Township on the Board of Zoning Appeals, Planning Commission and in 1998, on the merger commission that led to the creation of the City of Clayton. That year, Debbie was elected to the first City of Clayton Council and re-elected in 2001. Debbie worked diligently for the citizens of Clayton and to adopt the Clayton Charter in 1999 and the Clayton income tax in 2003.
Over the years, Debbie has served on numerous boards and commissions. She has served on the Prevent Blindness Ohio Board, the Dayton Jewish Community Center, Northmont Rotary and the Dayton Jewish Federation (Women's Division). She is a founding member of the progressive advocacy group, Women in Leadership and served as a member of the Development Committee for the Artemis Center for Alternatives to Domestic Violence. She also chaired the Artemis Gala in 2003 and 2004, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to combat domestic violence.
Since Debbie was elected to the Commission, she has adopted more causes. Debbie is proud to be co-chairing, with the Urban League's Willie Walker, the Economic Self Sufficiency Outcome Team. The Outcome Team is focusing on issues of employment for the homeless and the formerly incarcerated. She has joined several advisory committees, including the Community Literacy Board for Project Read, OSU Extension and Chair of the Dayton Peace Museum Dayton, City of Peace 2007 celebrations.
Over her career, Debbie's professional affiliations include the International Association of Assessing Officers and Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). Since joining the county commission, Debbie has become active in the County Commissioner's Association of Ohio (CCAO) where she serves on the executive board and the legislative and workforce development committees.
Debbie has a rich family life with husband Dennis, a criminal defense attorney. Debbie and Dennis have two very active sons, David and Daniel, who are active in little league, football, scouting and 4-H.
